Historic Atlanta Fire Department Fire Station #19

Located at 1063 N. Highland Ave. NE, Fire Station #19 is the oldest active fire station in Atlanta, GA. Since June 1, 1925, generations of dedicated firefighters have protected the people of the Virginia-Highland. An enduring example of the historic Virginia-Highland bungalow style architecture, this historical community landmark is in dire need of a substantial renovation. Recently, CBS Atlanta news featured the fire station in an on air segment in effort to spark donations for repairs. The station website states, “There is termite damage to the staircase, there are holes in the ceiling, and water collects on the floor of the garage due to lack of a drain.” Immediately following this report, local Virginia-Highland merchants sprung into action, allying with the fire station to help their cause. Local Italian eatery Osteria 832 has since stated that they will be donating all the proceeds to the fire station during their May 8, 2012 anniversary celebration. Several Virginia-Highland residents have been actively serving as volunteers for the fire station through hosting tours sponsored by the Atlanta Preservation Center. In time concerned citizens, volunteers, and fire station employees alike hope to raise the $400,000 necessary for local contractors Kronberg Wall to complete the renovations.

Let’s be sure to wish them luck, Critical Tourists! 🙂

On The Travel Trail Trivia: An original 1925 fire engine remains on display at the station to this day.
